HOW DO WE GROW AND WHAT DO WE USE?
We have a greenhouse/propagation shed and 2 large polytunnels in place. There are 2 outdoor bed areas. On its way are a metal shed for storing produce and tools, and an irrigation system with sprinklers and drip irrigation. Our first growing season in 2026 we are producing while still putting the infrastructure in place!
All our seeds are sourced from Tamar Organics and Seeds of Scotland.
What have we added to the soil?
- Manure from our own Tamworth pigs
- Manure from Sgriob Ruadh farm Tobermory (Isle of Mull Cheese)
- Manure from different smallholdings in Dervaig
- Peat free seed and potting compost (Klasmann Proline) from Dejex (Lincolnshire)
- Fish, Blood & Bone
- Calcified seaweed
We use biological pest control which is OMRI listed (are compliant with organic standards). All weeding is by using a hoe or by hand. We do not use any chemicals.
In future we will add seaweed and more manure, and compost produced on the croft.
The outdoor area was bracken dominated. We used pigs to churn up the land for us. To break up the soil further, we used a rotavator. On established outdoor ground we will use a power harrow annually to bring the ground back to a good state for sowing the next season.
In some areas we have teram in place to keep on top off the weeds, and to make paths. On the outdoor beds these covers will be removed every winter. We are very careful to not leave any threads/ plastic in the soil.
